Born to Kill

Born to Kill (1947) is a pitch-black film noir you can watch online on iFILM. Robert Wise — years before West Side Story — directed this RKO thriller, adapted from James Gunn's novel Deadlier than the Male, and it remains one of the meanest entries the genre ever produced.

Sam Wild (Lawrence Tierney) murders an ex-girlfriend and her date out of jealousy, then bolts for San Francisco. On the same train is Helen Brent (Claire Trevor), a coldly practical divorcée who stumbled onto the bodies and chose to say nothing. The attraction between them is immediate and toxic. The catch: Sam marries Helen's rich sister for the money, while Helen knows exactly what he is and still can't pull herself away.

The whole film runs on the poisonous chemistry of two people you'd never trust for a second. Tierney plays brutality that feels almost feral, Trevor plays calculating greed, and together they make a couple with no possible happy ending.
