Synopsis
The Major (Mayor, 2013) is a Russian crime thriller from Yuri Bykov you can watch online on iFILM. A winter morning, an icy road. Police major Sergey Sobolev races toward the hospital where his wife is giving birth, drives too fast, and kills a seven-year-old boy in front of the child's mother.
From there Sobolev has two roads: prison, or a cover-up. He calls in colleagues, and the well-oiled machine of mutual protection starts to turn. But the case refuses to stay buried — one concealment demands the next, each lie breeds another, and the price keeps climbing by the hour. By the time the major finally tries to stop and set something right, it's too late for everyone.
Bykov wrote, directed, and took a role himself, packing into 99 minutes a brutal statement about men in uniform who treat the badge as a license. Denis Shvedov carries the film almost wordlessly, all in the face. This is for viewers who want honest, uncomfortable Russian cinema with no tidy ending bolted on.
