Part two finds the master older and bolder; the stunts turn deadlier as the industrial age fades, and his recklessness onstage strains his marriage to Bess until she draws a line. It is more than chains and water tanks, too: there are quiet errands for intelligence services and a public war against fraudulent spiritualists.
