Synopsis
Stella Dallas (1937) is King Vidor's melodrama, free to watch online on iFILM. Barbara Stanwyck stars as a millworker's daughter who claws her way up the social ladder by marrying Stephen Dallas, a once-wealthy gentleman fallen on hard times.
The marriage sours fast. Stephen winces at her loud dresses and rough edges, drifting back toward an old flame, while Stella raises their daughter Laurel mostly alone. As the girl grows into a young woman with refined tastes, Stella faces a cruel truth: her own coarseness is the wall standing between Laurel and the polished world her mother could never enter.
Vidor turned a simple weepie into one of the sharpest studies of maternal sacrifice in pre-war Hollywood. Stanwyck was up for the Best Actress Oscar here, and the closing scene — a mother watching her daughter's wedding through a rain-streaked window from the street — still gets taught in acting classes. This one rewards viewers who like classic cinema with real ache underneath, not just polish. Watch Stella Dallas (1937) online on iFILM.
