Synopsis
The House (La Maison, 2022) is a French-Belgian drama you can watch online on iFILM. Anissa Bonnefont directs this adaptation of Emma Becker's autofiction novel about two years spent inside a Berlin brothel.
Emma is a novelist, played by Ana Girardot. Rather than imagine sex work from a desk, she takes a job in the house itself to write about it from the inside. A plan meant to last a few weeks stretches into two years. Around her are the madam and the other women, each with a past, a rate, and a line she won't cross. Emma watches and takes notes, until she can no longer tell where the research ends and her own life begins.
The film sits somewhere between confession and provocation, and it keeps asking itself an uncomfortable question: was this honest reporting, or a convenient excuse to live a forbidden fantasy.
