Synopsis
Stolen Kisses (Baisers volés, 1968) is François Truffaut's tender romantic comedy, free to watch online on iFILM. It marks the third chapter in the life of Antoine Doinel, the director's screen alter ego, again played by Jean-Pierre Léaud. The story picks up as Antoine gets thrown out of the army.
Back in civilian Paris, he drifts from one job to the next and botches them all. Night watchman: fired on day one. Apprentice at a private detective agency: hopeless. His loyal girlfriend Christine (Claude Jade) waits in the wings, but then he meets Fabienne, the wife of a shoe-shop owner he is hired to investigate. Delphine Seyrig makes her impossible to resist, and Antoine, naturally, does not even try. Michael Lonsdale plays her quietly wounded husband.
Shot in the spring of the May 1968 upheavals, the film floats on charm and a gentle mockery of its own hero, a man who simply refuses to grow up. It is among the warmest evenings the French New Wave ever offered, funny and a little melancholy at once. For anyone curious about early Truffaut, there is no better way in.
