Humane

Humane (2024) is a Canadian sci-fi thriller you can watch online on iFILM. It marks the feature directorial debut of Caitlin Cronenberg — and her father David Cronenberg turns up in the cast, which tells you something about the film's DNA.

The setup is a near-future where governments, facing ecological collapse, have launched voluntary euthanasia programs: citizens who sign up get a painless exit, their families collect a payout. A retired news anchor (Peter Gallagher) gathers his adult children for dinner and drops the news that he and his wife have enrolled. What the family does with that information over the course of one long night is where the thriller begins.

Where another filmmaker might have leaned into dystopian world-building, Cronenberg keeps the walls close — nearly everything happens inside the family home, and the dread comes from people, not set-pieces.
