Synopsis
Platform (站台, 2001) is a historical drama by Jia Zhangke you can watch online on iFILM. It follows a single decade — from the late 1970s into the early 1990s — through a traveling theater troupe based in Fenyang, a small town in Shanxi province.
Early on, the performers stage numbers praising Chairman Mao; years later the same stage carries rock music and dances borrowed from the West. Four young troupe members — led by Zhao Tao and Wang Hongwei — let us watch China shift around them: old rules dissolve, fashion and money arrive, and a restless longing sets in. Their romances and disappointments never sit apart from history; they move with it.
Jia Zhangke made one of the defining films of China's "sixth generation" — long takes, sparse music, time you can almost feel passing. The platform of the title is a train everyone waits for that never quite arrives. This one rewards patience with an honest, unhurried look at growing up amid upheaval.
