Synopsis
The Robe (1953) is a historical drama directed by Henry Koster, available to watch online on iFILM. At the foot of the cross, Roman tribune Marcellus gambles for and wins the robe of a man just crucified.
At first it's only cloth, a prize from a dice game. Then the visions start. Marcellus loses his grip on his mind and grows convinced that destroying the garment is the only cure. The search sends him after his slave Demetrius, who has fled with the relic — and instead of an answer the tribune stumbles into a community of early Christians the Empire already fears. Jean Simmons plays Diana, the woman he'll defy an emperor to keep.
One reason to know this film: it was the very first feature shot in widescreen CinemaScope, Hollywood's reply to the rise of television. Richard Burton was up for an Academy Award for the lead, and the sword-and-sandal spectacle of the 1950s is on full display. Stream The Robe (1953) online on iFILM.
