Synopsis
Moloch (1999) is an Alexander Sokurov art film you can watch online on iFILM — the opening entry in his tetralogy on the nature of power. Screenwriter Yuri Arabov took home the Best Screenplay prize at Cannes that year. Cinematographer Alexei Fyodorov shot in the Bavarian Alps, turning the mountain mist into something resembling a cage.
Spring 1942. Hitler (Leonid Mozgovoy) arrives at the alpine residence where Eva Braun (Yelena Rufanova) has been waiting, bored and restless. Goebbels, his wife Magda and Bormann join for a long weekend of meals, petty arguments and aimless wandering through fog. The war is happening somewhere else entirely. Sokurov keeps the camera close and unhurried, letting the absurdity accumulate until it becomes suffocating.
Stream Moloch (1999) online on iFILM. Stripping the ideology to expose the banality is more unsettling than any conventional villain portrait — if Tarkovsky is your measure, this belongs on the same shelf.
