Synopsis
Garage Olimpo (1999) is Marco Bechis' drama about Argentina's years of terror, and you can watch online on iFILM. Eighteen-year-old María teaches reading to the poor in Buenos Aires and quietly runs errands for the resistance. One morning an armed squad takes her, and her ordinary life simply stops mid-sentence.
She wakes up in a secret prison disguised as a car repair shop. One of the men who interrogates and tortures the prisoners is Félix — the shy lodger who rented a room in her house and was in love with her. Antonella Costa plays María with a fear you feel on your own skin, while Carlos Echevarría turns the torturer into something worse than a monster: a clock-watching man with an ID badge and a lunch break. A few meters above the basement, María's mother searches the city for a daughter the state insists never existed.
Bechis is not guessing at any of this. As a teenager he was held in a place like Olimpo before being expelled from the country, and that survival shows in the film's dry, unsentimental nerve. Hard, necessary cinema for anyone willing to look at state violence without a filter. Stream Garage Olimpo (1999) online on iFILM.
