There is no Ark. Military officials invented it to keep the crowd from rioting, and now the lie has outgrown them. Soft (Jerzy Stuhr) knows the truth and tries to spread it, but faith in salvation has made everyone deaf; they scheme and trade for a berth on a ship that was never built, while frost creeps in and the ceiling sags lower by the day. Mud, rumor, queues, cold — the misery is tactile.
