Das Boot (1985) is Wolfgang Petersen's German war drama you can watch online on iFILM. Autumn 1941, the Atlantic. The submarine U-96 sets out to hunt Allied convoys, and finds itself hunted just as often.

More than fifty men are sealed inside one cramped steel tube. Jürgen Prochnow plays the captain, a weary commander who has stopped believing the slogans and cares more about his crew than the cause. Around him are raw teenage sailors and a war correspondent whose eyes become ours. The camera barely surfaces: throbbing diesels, dripping condensation, the hull groaning under depth charges, and the silence where everyone waits to learn whether the metal will hold. The longer the patrol runs, the less heroism remains and the more fear, homesickness and grime take over.

It comes from the autobiographical novel by Lothar-Günther Buchheim, who rode a U-boat himself as a photographer. This extended series cut breathes slower than the theatrical version and presses down harder for it.
