Synopsis
Mr. Vampire (殭屍先生, 1985) is the Hong Kong horror-comedy you can watch online on iFILM — the film that built the entire hopping-vampire genre. A Taoist priest spots blue fingernails on a village elder's corpse, the telltale mark of a jiangshi. Moments later the dead man sits up.
What follows swings between real dread and slapstick. The unflappable Master Kau, played by Lam Ching-Ying and his legendary scowl, tries to keep order while his two bumbling disciples make everything worse: one gets bitten and slowly stiffens into a corpse himself, the other falls for a seductive ghost. The local rule for surviving a jiangshi is gloriously simple — hold your breath, because the creature tracks the living by their breathing. Half the film's gags grow straight out of that one idea.
This is the movie that launched a franchise and a whole subgenre, sending hopping corpses, paper talismans and sticky rice into dozens of imitators. The kung fu is staged for real, and the comedy needs no translation. A perfect entry point into Asian horror for anyone who assumed vampires only came from Transylvania.
