Sonic Underground (Season 1)

Sonic Underground (1999) is the action-adventure cartoon series you can watch online on iFILM, where the blue hedgehog fronts an underground rock band that fights a dictator and hunts for the mother he never knew.

The story opens with Queen Aleena overthrown by Doctor Robotnik. To save her newborn triplets — Sonic, Sonia and Manic — she splits them up and hides each in secret. The Oracle of Delphius foretold that the grown siblings would reunite, topple the tyrant and reclaim the throne of Mobius. Years later they band together as musicians whose guitars double as weapons, and almost every episode breaks into a song. Trailing behind them are Robotnik's clumsy bounty hunters, Sleet and Dingo. Jaleel White voices Sonic here, as he did across that era's shows.

Across forty episodes the prophecy plot is thin, but the musical numbers make this the oddest of the classic nineties Sonic cartoons. It plays best for kids and for retro Sega fans curious about a forgotten branch of the franchise. Stream Sonic Underground online on iFILM.
