Synopsis
Gate of Hell (Jigokumon, 1953) is Teinosuke Kinugasa's historical melodrama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. In twelfth-century Japan, during a palace revolt, the brave samurai Moritō rescues the noblewoman Kesa and falls hopelessly for her. As his reward he asks only for her hand — then learns she is already married.
Moritō won't let go. He demands that Kesa leave her husband and openly challenges the man, even as the couple respond with unnerving calm. The steadier they stay, the more the samurai burns, and his obsession drives all three toward an ending that cannot be called back. Kazuo Hasegawa and Machiko Kyō lead the cast, her quiet, composed face becoming one of the lasting images of Japanese cinema from that era.
What made the film history wasn't its plot but its color: one of the first Japanese productions shot on color stock, it stunned the West with the depth of its reds and golds. Cannes handed it the top prize, and the Academy added two statuettes, including one for Sanzo Wada's costumes. Anyone who loves the classics and painting in motion will find plenty to study here.
