Synopsis
Mr. Skeffington (1944) is a Warner Bros. melodrama you can watch online on iFILM. Director Vincent Sherman adapted the novel by "Elizabeth": society beauty Fanny Trellis marries the older banker Job Skeffington purely to shield her embezzling brother, then discards the marriage the moment the debt is cleared.
The brother dies in World War I. Fanny divorces Job, ships their daughter off to live with him in Europe, and spends the next twenty years running through younger admirers. Diphtheria strips her looks; her daughter elopes with her last companion. Then the man she never loved shows up again — blind, broke, and somehow at peace. Bette Davis carries 145 minutes of this without a weak scene; the Academy put her up for Best Actress, and Claude Rains landed a Best Supporting Actor nod alongside her.
