Synopsis
Kitty Foyle (1940) — watch online on iFILM. Sam Wood directed this drama from Christopher Morley's novel, and Ginger Rogers' performance in the title role took home the Best Actress Oscar for 1940.
Kitty (Rogers) is a white-collar working girl from Philadelphia — capable, independent, no family connections to speak of. Wyn Strafford (Dennis Morgan) is the socialite she fell for, old Philadelphia money, a family that considers her the wrong sort entirely. Dr. Mark Eisen (James Craig) is the opposite case: no fortune, no social standing, no condescension. The film keeps pulling Kitty back into both relationships across several years, and her final choice turns out to be less about romance than about what kind of life she is willing to accept.
Rogers had spent the previous decade in song-and-dance pictures alongside Fred Astaire. This is the film that showed the other side of her range. Adapted under the tagline "the natural history of a woman," it works as a character study rather than a tearjerker — and that is why it holds up. Stream Kitty Foyle (1940) on iFILM.
