He goes to her apartment. Her lover shows up. A struggle follows, and by the end of the night Wanley has a body to hide.

Lang lets the trap close slowly. The professor applies everything he knows about crime-solving to covering up his own — and every careful step creates a new complication. Massey as the investigating district attorney tightens the circle from the inside. The film's sharpest move is that Wanley's expertise makes things worse, not better.
