Synopsis
Samurai II: Duel at Ichijoji Temple (1955) is Hiroshi Inagaki's Japanese action-adventure, available to watch online on iFILM. It's the middle chapter of the celebrated trilogy about swordsman Miyamoto Musashi, with Toshiro Mifune in the lead.
After years on the road building his name as Japan's finest blade, Takezo comes back to Kyoto — not for Otsu, who still waits for him, but to challenge the region's top fencing school. Its followers won't fight fair: they lure him into ambush after ambush, all leading to the showdown at Ichijoji Temple, where one man faces an entire clan. Between duels, Musashi wrestles with his own pride and past as much as with any opponent.
Inagaki shoots the saga in lush color, fixed on honor, discipline and the price of glory. The trilogy's first film took home an Honorary Academy Award as best foreign feature, and this entry keeps the run at full strength. Essential for anyone drawn to classic chambara and to Mifune outside Kurosawa's films. Stream Samurai II: Duel at Ichijoji Temple (1955) online on iFILM.
