Synopsis
The Tale of Zatoichi (1962) is the black-and-white samurai drama you can watch online on iFILM — the film that launched one of Japan's longest-running screen sagas.
Zatoichi earns his keep as a wandering masseur and gambler, playing the harmless beggar wherever he turns up. Behind the meek smile hides one of the country's deadliest swordsmen, able to draw and strike before a sighted man can blink. Hired as muscle in a village split between two rival yakuza bosses, he strikes up an unlikely friendship with Hirate, a tubercular ronin fighting for the enemy — which turns the looming duel into a private tragedy for both men.
Shintaro Katsu owned the role so completely that it followed him across more than two dozen films and a TV series; few actors ever became a genre unto themselves like this. Kenji Misumi shoots the swordplay lean and sudden — long stillness, one cut, done. This is less a bloodbath than a quiet study of dignity in a man everyone writes off as nobody.
