Synopsis
A silent young drifter walks down a country road in 1936 France and turns toward a small riverside farm. That is where The Widow Couderc (La Veuve Couderc, 1971) begins — a French drama by Pierre Granier-Deferre you can watch online on iFILM.
The man calls himself Jean, and no one knows where he came from. The farm's owner, an aging widow named Couderc, gives him a roof, meals and work, then slowly gives him her heart as well. Their odd bond holds until Félicie, her young niece from the neighboring house, starts coming around. Underneath the rural calm, trouble is building: Jean is hiding from the police, and the widow's jealousy runs deeper than anyone expects.
Adapted from a Georges Simenon novel, the film rests entirely on its two leads. Simone Signoret plays loneliness without a single self-pitying note, while Alain Delon brings the charm of a man you should not trust. It is slow, bitter, beautifully sad cinema about two strangers grabbing one last chance not to be alone. Stream The Widow Couderc (1971) online on iFILM.
