Synopsis
The French Detective (Adieu poulet, 1975) is a French crime thriller you can watch online on iFILM, with Lino Ventura in the lead. In Rouen, days before an election, hired thugs gun down a campaign volunteer and then a policeman. Chief inspector Verjeat already knows who paid them: Lardatte, a councilman powerful enough to stay untouchable.
Verjeat works the case his own way, rough around the edges and not always by the book, and runs straight into the politician his superiors want left alone. Then comes the squeeze — he's being transferred out of town within a week. With Lefèvre, a young detective played by Patrick Dewaere, he rigs a careful scheme to steal back enough time to corner a man the law won't touch.
Directed by Pierre Granier-Deferre, this is solid 1970s French polar, from the years when an honest cop versus the system was the genre's whole nervous system. Ventura carries it on posture alone: a tired man who simply refuses to lose quietly. One for fans of old European noir that trusts faces over gunfire.
