Synopsis
Cheburashka (1971) is a Soviet stop-motion short by Roman Kachanov, and you can watch it online on iFILM. It's the second film about Gena the Crocodile and his big-eared little friend, made at the legendary Soyuzmultfilm studio. Twenty-one minutes long, beloved for over fifty years.
It's Gena's birthday, so Cheburashka turns up with a gift. From there the two set their sights higher: they want to join the Young Pioneers, so they build a playground for local kids and round up scrap metal alongside them. Vasily Livanov voices Gena; Klara Rumyanova gives Cheburashka that soft, unmistakable squeak.
The film grew out of Eduard Uspensky's stories, and this is where the now world-famous Cheburashka first took shape on screen. No villains, no chases — just friendship and small acts of kindness, handmade puppet by puppet. Lovely for small children and for the grown-ups who grew up on it.
