The extra time doesn't soften anything. During the king crab run, the Northwestern cleans up near Akutan Island and turns straight around for more, while the Aleutian Ballad survives a 65-foot rogue wave that will stay with the crew for a long time. Come January, the opilio season opens with an arctic storm pressing in — the Time Bandit keeps pushing north, but the Rollo and Maverick are dealing with fights between exhausted crewmen chasing bad grounds. On the Cornelia Marie, deckhand Dave Gilbert goes down on an iced deck and becomes the first injury of the season.
