Synopsis

J.B. Ball, a powerful Wall Street financier (Edward Arnold), loses his temper with his wife's spending and throws her expensive sable coat out the window. It lands on Mary Smith (Jean Arthur), a working girl with no money and no idea what just hit her. Within hours, the city's gossip circuit has her pegged as Ball's mistress. The assumed status unlocks hotel suites and lines of credit Mary never asked for — and Ball's son Johnny (Ray Milland) stumbles into her orbit at exactly the wrong moment.
