Anna Kalman is a stage actress who has quietly given up on finding a lasting relationship. Then Philip Adams walks in — diplomat, economist, precisely the kind of man she'd given up on meeting. He's also, as he tells her upfront, a married man who has no plans to change that. Anna takes the arrangement on its stated terms. Philip never quite expects her to be so comfortable with it — or so clever about turning it back on him.

Grant is at the smoothest edge of his light-comedy register here, and Bergman is allowed to be genuinely funny in a way her more dramatic roles rarely permitted.
