Synopsis
The Browning Version (1951) is a British drama directed by Anthony Asquith that you can watch online on iFILM. Andrew Crocker-Harris, a classics master at an English public school, is being pushed out over failing health and is living through the final days of his last term.
He leaves with nothing. The boys feared and quietly despised him, nicknaming him the Himmler of the lower fifth. The school denies him a pension and shoves his farewell to the bottom of the order of ceremony. At home his wife Millie, played by Jean Kent, makes no secret of her affair with a younger colleague and calls him a failure to his face. Crocker-Harris hides behind a mask of cold restraint, but beneath it sits the ache of a man who believes his whole life has come to nothing. Then one small, unexpected kindness forces him to look again at everything he has done.
Michael Redgrave gives one of his finest performances here: a lifetime of buried feeling held behind a stone face until it finally cracks. Adapted from Terence Rattigan's play, it stays precise and never tips into easy sentiment. Redgrave took the Best Actor prize at Cannes for the role. This is intimate, deeply English cinema for anyone who prizes restraint over spectacle. Stream The Browning Version (1951) online on iFILM.
