Synopsis
The Browning Version (1994) is a British drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Mike Figgis. It adapts Terence Rattigan's 1948 stage play — material previously filmed with Michael Redgrave in 1951 — and gives the central role to Albert Finney, who turns in one of the most controlled and quietly devastating performances of his career.
Andrew Crocker-Harris has spent nearly twenty years teaching Greek and Latin at an English boys' boarding school. The students call him "the Crock" and dread his classes. His wife Laura (Greta Scacchi) is having an open affair with a younger American teacher (Matthew Modine) and makes no effort to hide it. The school is now pushing him out early, with no pension and no recognition. Michael Gambon plays the headmaster; Julian Sands also appears.
What Figgis keeps from Rattigan is the refusal to offer easy catharsis. A single unexpected act of generosity from a student is the only crack in the wall — and Finney plays it without a single false note. Austere and precise in the way only British chamber drama can be.
