Synopsis
The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939) is a Hollywood drama you can watch online on iFILM — William Dieterle's grand adaptation of Victor Hugo's novel. Paris, 1482: the cathedral bells loom over a city seething with festivals, faith and cruelty.
Deaf bell-ringer Quasimodo knows no world beyond the towers of Notre Dame. His guardian, the magistrate Frollo, becomes obsessed with the Romani dancer Esmeralda and, unable to master himself, would sooner see her hang than let her go. The deformed outcast turns out to be the only one capable of real tenderness, and he fights to save her. Charles Laughton plays Quasimodo under heavy makeup, pulling a wounded, fully human soul out of the monster; for Maureen O'Hara, Esmeralda was the role that swung Hollywood's doors open.
Dieterle staged one of RKO's most massive pre-war productions — towering cathedral sets, vast crowds, that rooftop finale. Many still call it the finest Hugo ever put on film. If old-school epics are your thing, start right here. Stream The Hunchback of Notre Dame online on iFILM.
