Synopsis
Portrait of Jennie (1948) is William Dieterle's haunting romantic fantasy, and you can watch online on iFILM. In Depression-era New York, a broke painter with no spark left meets a curious girl in a snow-covered park.
Her name is Jennie (Jennifer Jones). Every time they cross paths she's visibly older, talking about people and events from decades gone by, as if time bends around her alone. Eben Adams (Joseph Cotten) begins to paint her, and the work suddenly comes alive — even as he falls for a woman who, by all logic, shouldn't exist. Who she is and where she keeps arriving from is the mystery that pulls the film toward a storm-lashed lighthouse.
David O. Selznick produced it from Robert Nathan's novella, with Ethel Barrymore and silent-era icon Lillian Gish in support. The tinted, color-washed finale picked up the year's special-effects Oscar. A quiet, poetic film about love outside time — catnip for classic-Hollywood lovers.
