Synopsis
"Gay Purr-ee" (1962) is a UPA animated musical you can watch online on iFILM, with Judy Garland voicing Mewsette — a wide-eyed country cat who trades the farm for the glamour of 1890s Paris. She lands directly into a con run by the slick Meowrice and the scheming Madame Rubens-Chatte, who dress up their racket as a modeling agency.
Her loyal tomcat Jaune-Tom and the lovable Robespierre — voiced by Robert Goulet and Red Buttons — chase her across France. The real visual hook is the backgrounds: each Paris sequence is a painted pastiche of a different French Impressionist, from Seurat's dots to Toulouse-Lautrec's silhouettes. Garland recorded the soundtrack the same year as her landmark Carnegie Hall concert, and that voice carries every song further than the animation probably earns on its own.
