Synopsis
The Fabulous Baron Munchausen (Baron Prášil, 1962) is animation wizard Karel Zeman's adventure fantasy that you can watch online on iFILM, a Czech blend of live actors and hand-drawn worlds.
A modern-day astronaut touches down on the Moon, only to find he's been beaten to it. Baron Munchausen, Cyrano de Bergerac and Jules Verne's space travelers are already settled in. Mistaking the spaceman for a lunar native, the Baron hauls him back to Earth and drags him through one tall tale after another: a breakout from a Turkish sultan's palace, a gallop across the open sea, a voyage inside the belly of an enormous fish.
Zeman drew engravings styled after old book illustrations and dropped real performers inside them, so every frame reads like a 19th-century page come to life. That handcrafted look later fed the imaginations of Terry Gilliam and Tim Burton. Miloš Kopecký plays the Baron with the unflappable charm of a champion liar.
