Synopsis
The Night of the Shooting Stars (La notte di San Lorenzo, 1982) is a war drama by Paolo and Vittorio Taviani you can watch online on iFILM. The war comes filtered through a child's eyes and a grown woman's memory.
Tuscany, August 1944. The Allies are near, the Germans are pulling back and torching everything behind them. In the town of San Martino they mine the houses and herd the locals into the cathedral. Some refuse to trust the church walls and slip out into the fields at night, heading toward the advancing Americans. Women, old men and children trudge through the vineyards while a squad of local Blackshirts tracks them. The reckoning lands amid the wheat, under a sky of falling stars.
Italian folklore says wishes come true on the night of San Lorenzo; the Tavianis set that legend against an actual massacre, and the clash hits harder than any battlefield. The film took the Grand Prix of the Jury at the 1982 Cannes Festival. Because it's framed as remembrance, brutality sits beside an almost fairy-tale tenderness. For lovers of grand European war cinema with no heroic gloss. Stream The Night of the Shooting Stars (1982) online on iFILM.
