Synopsis
Measuring the World (Die Vermessung der Welt, 2012) is a German period drama you can watch online on iFILM. It traces two geniuses who took the measure of the planet from opposite directions: aristocrat Alexander von Humboldt, who climbed into volcanoes and paddled the Orinoco, and the poor man's son Carl Friedrich Gauss, who barely left his hometown yet decoded the cosmos with numbers alone.
Humboldt was raised for ballrooms and hunting parties, but the wild places pulled at him — he gambled his life in the jungle for a single accurate reading. Gauss, prickly and reclusive, rewrote mathematics without rising from his desk. Florian David Fitz and Albrecht Schuch play the pair with wit and warmth, joined by Vicky Krieps and Katharina Thalbach. The two finally cross paths at an 1828 scientific congress in Berlin.
Director Detlev Buck adapted Daniel Kehlmann's worldwide bestseller and shot the whole thing in 3D — an odd, bold choice for a costume drama. The result is a film about science as obsession that never once turns dull. Stream Measuring the World (2012) online on iFILM.
