Synopsis
The Dark Valley (Das finstere Tal, 2014) is an Austrian-German thriller directed by Andreas Prochaska — stream it online on iFILM. Sam Riley plays Greider, a solitary rider who arrives at a remote Alpine lumber village in late autumn, claims to be a photographer, and asks to stay through winter. The village is run by the Brauthardt clan, and no one here welcomes strangers. Tobias Moretti leads the family.
The clan controls everything: land, labor, women, and the decisions that go with them. They tolerate Greider because he pays well. But as the first snow seals the mountain pass, the villagers begin sensing that this man came for a reason — and that whatever it is, they are already part of it.
Prochaska shoots the Alps in midwinter like a pressure cooker: grey light, close walls, and silences that carry weight. The film operates as a slow-burn alpine western, borrowing the genre's bones and filling them with something distinctly European and genuinely cold. Patience is rewarded.
