Synopsis

Ukraine, early 1930s. Yuriy, the son of a Cossack family, leaves for Kyiv to study painting and the woman he loves behind. He comes back to a country being taken apart from above: Soviet authorities strip villages of their grain, those who resist are deported or shot, and Stalin's deliberate famine of 1932–33 kills millions of Ukrainians. The film tells this through two people's struggle to find each other on the other side of it — love, the choice between flight and resistance, what it costs to survive without losing yourself.
A Canadian-British production and one of the few Western films to address the Holodomor directly. For viewers who know the historical outline but not the human scale of it, this is a rare entry point into events that took decades to reach cinema screens.
