Synopsis
Glorious 39 (2009) is Stephen Poliakoff's period thriller, free to watch online on iFILM. The summer before war breaks across Europe, Anne Keyes — the adopted daughter of a powerful English family — stumbles on a set of hidden recordings, and the polished calm of the countryside estate quietly begins to curdle.
The deeper Anne digs, the clearer it gets: people close to her are pushing for an appeasement deal with Hitler, and her own relatives will go to frightening lengths to keep that buried. Romola Garai carries the lead, surrounded by Bill Nighy, Julie Christie, a young Eddie Redmayne and Charlie Cox, plus David Tennant and Christopher Lee. Poliakoff skips the battlefield entirely and stages his dread inside one stately home, where a smile across the dinner table cuts deeper than any air raid.
