Synopsis
The Snow Queen (1957) is the Soyuzmultfilm hand-drawn classic you can watch online on iFILM, adapted from Hans Christian Andersen by director Lev Atamanov. It opens on a frozen night, when the ruler of the blizzards carries the boy Kai off to her palace of ice and a splinter of an enchanted mirror turns his heart cold.
Refusing to believe her friend is gone, little Gerda sets out after him entirely alone. Her road runs through a sorceress's everlasting summer garden, past a talking raven and a rough robber girl with a reindeer, all the way to a Lapland hut and the queen's glittering hall at the edge of the world. Each stranger she meets nudges her one step closer to the frozen throne.
The animators rotoscoped real performers frame by frame, which is why the characters move with a grace startling for 1957. Hayao Miyazaki has repeatedly credited this very film with pulling him toward a career in animation. Tender and a little melancholy, it argues that loyalty can thaw any winter — a fine choice for a family evening with children of any age. Stream The Snow Queen (1957) online on iFILM.
