Synopsis
The Seduction of Mimi (Mimì metallurgico ferito nell'onore, 1972) is Lina Wertmüller's Italian political satire, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Sicilian laborer Carmelo — everyone calls him Mimì — casts what he believes is a secret vote against the Mafia's man, and it costs him his job.
Out of work, Mimì flees the sun-baked south for industrial Turin. There he falls for Fiore, a fiery Communist organizer, and walks out on his frigid wife. But the Mafia has long reach: they lure him back to Sicily with a better job, and now he lives in dread, hiding a pregnant mistress from everyone. Then his wife announces she's expecting too. Giancarlo Giannini plays a small man spun helplessly by politics, honor and wounded male pride.
Wertmüller turns a bedroom farce into a barbed parable about Sicily, class and the codes of "honor" that become a cage. Half a century on, the comedy still bites — funny, absurd and unexpectedly bleak. One for viewers who like Italian cinema that smuggles politics in under the laughter.
