Synopsis
The Kingdom (Riget, 1994) is a Danish horror-comedy series you can watch online on iFILM, co-directed by Lars von Trier and Morten Arnfred. Copenhagen's most advanced hospital stands on an old bleaching swamp — and the swamp has a long memory.
A phantom ambulance pulls up to the entrance every night and vanishes before anyone can reach it. Voices echo up through the elevator shaft. A fetus is growing at an impossible rate. The kitchen staff with Down syndrome hear a girl screaming from inside the walls — a girl murdered by her doctor father in 1919. The hospital's arrogant Swedish neurosurgeon, played by Ernst-Hugo Järegård, refuses to believe any of it, making him both the sceptic and the best comedy the show has to offer.
Shot on grainy, jittery handheld film that looks nothing like television and everything like a fever dream, Riget blends dread and dark farce in a way that resisted easy genre labels in 1994 and still does.
