Synopsis
The Laramie Project (2002) is an HBO drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Moisés Kaufman, who also staged the original play. In October 1998, twenty-one-year-old Matthew Shepard was beaten and left to die near Laramie, Wyoming — a hate crime that hit the national nerve and forced a reckoning no one in that college town had asked for.
The eight-member Tectonic Theatre Project spent two years traveling to Laramie, recording hours of conversations with residents: ministers, bartenders, police officers, students, neighbors who happened to be nearby. Those transcripts became a stage piece, then this film — verbatim words from real people, no invented dialogue. Kaufman assembled a cast that reads like a film festival lineup: Steve Buscemi, Laura Linney, Christina Ricci, Janeane Garofalo, Peter Fonda, and a dozen more, each taking on multiple real Laramie voices.
The film listens rather than argues. No courtroom speeches, no neat conclusions — just a small city trying to figure out what it believes after the worst thing imaginable happened on its doorstep. That deliberate quiet is what makes it land harder than a polemic would. Stream The Laramie Project (2002) online on iFILM.
