Synopsis
The Virgin of Lust (La virgen de la lujuria, 2002) is a drama from Mexican master Arturo Ripstein, and you can watch it online on iFILM. It unfolds in the port city of Veracruz during the 1940s.
Nacho, an Indian waiter at the café inside Hotel Ofélia, falls for Lola — beautiful, ruined, addicted to opium and drink, and hopelessly fixated on a man who has no use for her: a masked wrestler called Gardenia Wilson. Nacho knows the love will never be returned, yet he'll endure any humiliation to stay near her. Lola, for her part, can turn cruel. The café's regulars, Spanish Republicans exiled by Franco, feed her fantasy of assassinating the dictator. Juan Diego and Ariadna Gil lead the cast.
Running two and a half hours, the film carries Ripstein's signature look — airless, stagey, the line between waking life and fantasy dissolving as obsession swallows reality. This is slow, heavy cinema for viewers ready to sit with a story of fixation that offers no comfort. Stream The Virgin of Lust (2002) online on iFILM.
