Synopsis
Earth (1930) is a Ukrainian silent drama directed by Alexander Dovzhenko that you can watch online on iFILM. Set during Soviet collectivisation, it follows a young kolkhoz farmer named Vasyl who secures the village's first tractor and begins breaking up the private field boundaries that kulaks have guarded for generations.
That same night, Vasyl is murdered. The act crystallises the film's conflict — old claim against new order. Cinematographer Danylo Demutsky shot each scene as if composing a painting: sun-scorched wheat fields, moonlit dancing, ripe apples, bodies returning to the soil. Dovzhenko never made a simple propaganda poster, and Soviet censors criticised him for it.
Earth has appeared on major all-time lists of world cinema. It holds up not as a historical document but as a film that treats land as something which absorbs generations whole. Stream Earth (1930) on iFILM.
