Synopsis
Nova Zembla (2011) is a Dutch historical survival drama you can watch online on iFILM. Late sixteenth century: Willem Barentsz leads his third attempt to find a northeast passage to Asia, with young crew writer Gerrit de Veer recording everything. The ice has other plans.
The ship gets locked in the frozen waters off an archipelago that won't be mapped for decades. The crew builds a shelter from salvaged timber and digs in for the polar winter — no rescue coming, polar bears circling, provisions shrinking. Robert de Hoog, Jan Decleir and Doutzen Kroes head the cast through six months of cold that killed Barentsz himself before spring arrived.
Director Reinout Oerlemans shot in actual arctic locations, and de Veer's diary — the film's source — is still required reading in Dutch schools. Unhurried, grounded in real record, and grimmer than most period adventure films dare to be. Stream Nova Zembla online on iFILM.
