Synopsis
Hamlet (1964) is the Soviet screen adaptation of Shakespeare's tragedy, directed by Grigori Kozintsev and available to watch online on iFILM. Kozintsev shot at a real castle in Estonia — not a studio set, but actual stone used as a metaphor for a mind under siege. Innokenti Smoktunovsky plays the Prince.
Elsinore here is a court where everything lies, including the silences. Mikhail Nazvanov's Claudius radiates authority untethered from conscience; Anastasia Vertinsky's Ophelia is a fragility the state crushes without noticing. When Smoktunovsky delivers "To be or not to be" with his back to the camera, the effect is stranger and more honest than any conventional staging.
Boris Pasternak translated the text and Dmitri Shostakovich composed the score. The film took a special jury prize at Venice in 1964 and holds its place as the definitive Soviet Shakespeare on screen. Stream Hamlet online on iFILM.
