Synopsis
We'll Live Till Monday (1968) is a Soviet school drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Stanislav Rostotsky and starring Vyacheslav Tikhonov as history teacher Ilya Melnikov. Three unremarkable days in a Moscow school. Nothing explodes — just people.
Melnikov is a good teacher who has stopped believing it matters. He's honest with his students and exacting with himself, which makes him difficult to be around. A small scandal arrives when a student writes an essay on happiness that cuts too close to the truth, forcing Melnikov's reluctant hand. Meanwhile his young colleague Svetlana (Irina Pechyornikova) is quietly in love with him — a feeling he registers and can't return.
The film marked the screen debuts of Olga Ostroumova and Igor Starygin as students, and the lead role earned Tikhonov a USSR State Prize. Rostotsky built a school film without moralizing — harder than it sounds, and exactly why it still holds up. Stream We'll Live Till Monday online on iFILM.
