Synopsis
The Dawns Here Are Quiet (1972) is Stanislav Rostotsky's war drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Adapted from Boris Vasilyev's novella, it follows five young anti-aircraft gunners and their sergeant in the forests of Karelia in 1942.
Sergeant Vaskov, played by Andrei Martynov, asked for soldiers who wouldn't drink or chase girls and was handed a squad of women straight out of training. When German paratroopers turn up in the woods, he leads five of them to cut the enemy off, certain there are only two intruders. There are sixteen. Zhenya, Rita, Liza, Sonya and Galya each carried a small dream of love or home, and the war catches every one of them mid-sentence.
Rostotsky films their pre-war memories in warm color and the front in near-monochrome, so every loss hits twice. The picture competed for the Oscar as best foreign-language film and was seen by tens of millions across the Soviet Union. The quiet here isn't peace — it's the breath before something you can't unsee. Stream The Dawns Here Are Quiet online on iFILM.
