Synopsis
King of the Belgians (2016) is a mockumentary road comedy directed by Peter Brosens and Jessica Hope Woodworth, available to watch online on iFILM. King Nicolas III is mid-state-visit in Istanbul when his country tips toward a political split — and a solar storm grounds every plane over Europe. No flights. No phones. The royal tour is over.
Peter van den Begin plays the king who has to get home overland, incognito, slipping through Balkan border crossings with a British documentary crew in tow and a Bulgarian folk ensemble somehow attached to the convoy. Every checkpoint is improvised. Nothing goes according to protocol.
Deadpan and quietly subversive — a Belgian-Bulgarian-Dutch co-production that works better as a satire on European identity and royal irrelevance than as a straight comedy. Stream King of the Belgians (2016) on iFILM.
