Synopsis
Captain Nevelskoy and the Lands of the Black Dragon (2026) is a Russian animated fantasy-adventure feature to watch online on iFILM. Directors Gleb Pavlenko and Nikita Slichny anchor the story in real history: naval officer Gennady Nevelskoy was the man who proved in 1849 that Sakhalin was an island and opened the Amur estuary to Russian ships.
In the film, Nevelskoy is marooned in St. Petersburg — a decorated Naval Academy graduate stuck teaching seamanship to the Tsarevich while other expeditions sail east without him. Fourteen-year-old Nadezhda, a student at an institute for noble girls, feels pulled toward the Far East; she can't quite explain why. The two meet, and the film becomes a journey heading toward the lands neither of them has seen. Vsevolod Kuznetsov, Mikhail Belyakovich, and Vasily Bochkarev lead the voice cast.
At 90 minutes, it holds up as a family watch — adventurous enough for children, grounded enough in actual geography and history to hold adult attention. Stream it online on iFILM.
